Carola Braunbock was born on 9th of january 1924 in Wscherau, Bohemia and died on 4.7.1978 in Berlin. She acted in German movies apparently from 1950 until 19781).

Carola Braunbock acted in the multiply awarded film of Wolfgang Staudte (after Thomas Mann) "The Subject" (1951) Emmi Hessling. In "Hegdehog Parade" - a series of GDR-short films produced between 1953 and 1964 which carefully dealed with the problems of really existing socialism, Carola Braunbock appeared in the 131/2 minutes lasting movie "Dreams are Foam" (1963). 1964 she actec in "Follow me, XXXCanaillen" as Baroness and probably last in "Seven Freckles" (1978) the Cook. Three times she has been present in the popular GDR criminal series "Polizeiruf 110" (Police call 110) (Burned Trail, 1972; No Paradise for Magpies, 1974; Peter Schnok is missing, 1977). As a speaker she lend her voice to Tortilla in "Burattino", to the Landlady in "Vier Frauen eines Sonntags" (Four Women one Sunday) der Wirtin, as well as the Mother in the fairytale radio play "Die Nachtigall" (The Nightingale, after H. C. Andersen) of 1976.

It seems, that the filmcrew did not know Carola Braunbock was born in Bohemia, and she talked German at sthe set the whole time. Just during the alst days, she started speaking Czech so the crew realised, that she was born near Plsen and attended primary school there. Václav Vorlíček remembers: "I don't know how much she picked up when the make-up artists said to each other "Comb the old woman", but I don't believe that such things have been dropped. There has been no fauxpas."

Daniela Hlaváčová is leading an art-school in Prag-Liben. She told the Czech reporter Jana Podskalská in the end of 2002 some insidents, which happened while shooting 3nfc:

"... You have been acting in a fairytale film which became immortal - Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella. Can you remember the shooting?
It is almost as long ago as ice age - 30 years. I know it for sure, because I had been pregnant those days - my daughter is 30 now.

On set everybody was very nice. The worst scene was the one in the pond. Stuntmen jumped into the water instead of us. Carola Braunbock and me stood in the trailer, watched them jumping into the pool and hoping that it would work out the first time.

Did it work out?
Yes. The whole day before technicians had to break up the ice so that you could see the water. They built a scaffolding for me so that I didn't have to stand in the icecold water. Carola Braunbock was wearing a fisherman's suit under her costume. I was standing 15 cm above the water and everybody was afraid that something could happen to me or the baby. The winter has been awful.

The actor's daily bread is hard...
You're telling me! To date I wonder why we didn't freeue during the shooting. In one scene Libuše Šafránková has read hands - that wasn't artificial, it was real! The boys - Jarda Drbohlav, Pavel Trávníček and Slavek Jandák were wearing thin leathershoes - they had to dance. The scene was shot outsinde in the snow and their feet became stiff. I asked them, how they could stand walking in these thin shoes.

Nothing of that can be seen on TV.
That's it. The shooting was super. Even though in addition a lot of us went doing scenes in their theaters and after that came back to the set. The interior was shot in Germany, the exterior near Klatovy. Once I had a remarkable experience. We had to fly to Germany for two weeks to do some shooting, V
lada Menšík, Libuška Šafránková and me. In the morning we arrived at the airport. Three times we started and had to land again because of the terrible weather. At last we had to go by train.

It must have been a funny journey?
Right. Our tour guide had to get hold of tickets for the train to Germany, first. Another problem was to get our luggage from the airport to the train. Vlada Menšík called Simonova Cladil an. I said: Don't make nonsens, it is in the evening, they have a concert. Fortunately a taxi arrived by which we could go to the train station. The train didn't have sleeping cars. We were spread over two compartments, but could not sleep. After the customs on the airport we didn't have much money left. We were exhausted, but still laughing. Then it happened.

After having crossed the border the compartment door opened and a white dressed man came in. He held a sprinkler and carried a can on his back. Libuška and I stared at him. He said, that an infectious disease was spreading through the country. Media claimed the release had been sick giraffes in the zoo.

Then the shower was waiting ...
Exactly. When the man was ready with desinfection, some Centimeters of water remained on the floor. It sloshed around when the train was moving - we laughed our heads off. We were comletely bushed when we reached our destination. The platform had become a real ice-skating ground because of the low temperatures. We didn't use the stairs but crossed the track. The other travellers using the proper way were looking unbeleivingly at us and at what we were doing. No German would do this! Moreover, the guy who should take us to the set was late.

There we were, sitting on the sidewalk at a quarter past five in the morning laughing. Around us people were standing, glancing sleepily around, having to go to work and trying to kill us with their eyes... can you imagine to go to the set immediately after such a journey and choose the loveliest gowns for the ball - it was perfect!

You know, this is what makes this movie. Just because of effort and stamina the fairytale got such power. Everybody worked on it with a lot of energy and this energy is shining from the film."

Rolf Hoppe

was born on 6.12.1930 in Ellrich/Harz a son of a baker master craftsman. After training a goat in his Childhood and riding on cows, as a teenager he entered an acting team within the Antifa-youth. His father would have liked him to be his successor, so Rolf took up a baker's apprenticeship. Later, however, he studied at the "Staatliches Landeskonservatorium" in Erfurt. After having finfished acting school, he was stroken by a paralysis of the vocal chord. Still keen on animals, he took a job as keeper at Circus Aeros. It was there he learned riding, a skill which would become profitable for some DEFA productions. But Rolf Hoppe intended not to give up acting, and indeed a training at "Institut für Stimmbildung" helped, and an engagement in Halle/Saale followed.

Since then Rolf Hoppe played in up to 200 films. Often he embodied the bad guy, as in DEFA adaption of Karl May's "Winnetou". As Hoppe reported within an interview of "Berliner Morgenpost", it happened, that classmates would not play with his children, because daddy had been nasty to Winnetou. In some radio plays Hoppe lend his voice to characters, such as the White Rabbit in "Alice im Wunderland", also can be heard in "Brüderchen und Schwesterchen" (Brother and Sister) und "Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot" (Snow-White and Rose-Red) as narrator. After having played in over 90 GDR films, Rolf Hoppe became internationally famous through his role of a German general (meant to remind of Göring) in Istvan Szábos "Mephisto", a film which was awarded by the Academy for the best non-american film.

As King in 3nfc Hoppe has gained one of the rare sypathical roles. Václav Vorlíček, having to take Germans for some parts because of the cooperation with DEFA, casted them by catslists, photos and filmscenes. and decided to take Rolf Hoppe as the king. Hoppe was very popular in Germany those days. He was playing, as Vorlíčec was percieving it, always the bad guy, "but because of his interesting blue eyes I took him." 30 years later both of them met again on a film festival in Gera (Germany). At first Vorlíček did not recognize Hoppe because of his full beard, but someaone told him: "The grey bearded man over there is your main character from "Cinderella"!" Vorlíček reports having had a nice evening together after that...

Besides his occupation in film Rolf Hoppe is member of the "Staatstheater Dresden" ensemble. Between 1970 and 1975 he worked at "Deutsches Theater Berlin" and in the 80s even in Salzburg ("Mammon" in "Jedermann" (Everybody)), Switzerland, Italy and even in China. Still he could not yet play his favourite role Nathan the Wise. His last film so far is "Der Bruch" (The Burglary) by Frank Beyer (1989).

Today Hoppe lives together with his wife in Weißig near Dresden. In his home town, which is important to him, he is culturally engaged, e.g. on Castle Weesenstein he established a muscal-literal series (Dresdner Dreiklänge / Dresden Triad). The stage is alway sold out, when Hoppe reads fairytales, ballads or ghost stories.

Karin Lesch was born in 1935 as daughter of actress Mathilde Danegger. After playing the millers daughter at Postdam Theater, she also embodied the female leading role in the 1959 GDR adaption of Rumpelstiltskin. The film with the title "Das Zaubermännchen" (The Magic Manikin) can be bought even today as a DVD (in Germany). She played from 1959 to 1973 in some TV- and Cinema-productions, but her filmography is short. Her role as Queen in "Three hazelnuts for Cinderella" must have been one of her last roles, because after that her trail vanishes and I cannot find out what has become of her. The fact that I can offer at least some information here I owe to Katrin and Uta of www.defa-sternstunden.de, thank you!

Vladimír Menšík probably is the best known czech children's film actor. He was born in Ivanice on 9.10.1929 and died on 29.05.1988 in Brno at the age of 58.

After sepnding short time on the stage Menšík acted in more than 150 films. Besides his roles in children's films such as "Pan Tau" (Josef Urban), "Arabela" (Herrn Maier) and "Der Fliegende Ferdinand" (Flying Ferdinand) (Bernhard Trenkel), Menšík appeared in serious films, like Milos Forman's "Loves of a Blonde" and "The Visitors". In live-broadcasts his talent for improvisation took effect and made him a star. In his native town there is a Vladimír Menšík-Museum today showing clothes, papers and fotos as well as a statue of the beloved actor. It is opened daily.

Born on 28. 9. 1931 in Zlín Jan Libíček came to film in his thirties. Above all he appeared as young nobleman, baron or show-offHe filled his parts with . His parts Libíček filled mit warmth and heartiness, like his role as a facade worker from the countryside taking on a job with two workmates in the city in "Männer von Welt" (1969). Also in TV he mostly played comical parts and appeared in entertainment broadcasts. He was awarded with prices and counted for one of the best actors of the Czech Republic.

On May 24th 1974, one year after finishing 3nfc, he died at the age of only 42 years having stood before the camera in 38 films.

Born on 14.2.1933 in Třebíči Czech theater and film actress Míla Myslíková has yet before and also after 3nfc played for films. 1965 in "Zlocin v divci skole" ("Crime in Girls' School") as woman in the bath, 1968 in "Rozmarné léto" ("A Lauric Summer") as Katerina Durová, 1971 in "Babička" (together with Libuše) as Prosková, 1981 in "Tajemstvi hradu v Karpatech" ("The lonely House in the Carpathians") and 1990 in "Skrivánci na niti" (Larks on a string) as Defector.

Her mother owned a tailoring for theater and costumes, so Míla practically grew up with this world. She even got a part because of the contacs of the tailoring with the theater. She remembers, that sadly she didn't play well, then and thought after that, that she didn't have talent. But she was still interested in acting and so she attended the acting school JAMU and got engagements in several theaters.

Besides she doesn't want to do films. If she did anyway, roles have been very characteristic for her, in fact so much, that the audience likes to keep her in mind.

In the 1960ies she met e finnic journalist in Kalevově and fell in love immediately. Thereofre she has been to Finland for some occasions and wrote some books. As a result her actual profession is authoress. Despite the Finn she never got married and is living alone nowadays. Her best friend is a dog.

Vítěszlav Jandák (born 1947) wanted to study law first. But he could not study this, because his father was in prison in the late 60ies first because of "uprising" and later because of high treason. So only acting remained for his son. Vítěszlav Jandák played in the rather well-known series "Return of the fairytale-bride" Targan. His filmography aos contains: Tankovy Prapor, Ticha Bolest (1990), Prince Frog (1990), Pravidla Kruhu (1989), Copak Je to Za Vojaka? (1988), Az Do Konce (1986), Havarie (1985), Stin Kapradiny (1985), Dym Bramborove Nate (1977). Meanwhile he has made it to president of the International Festival of Childrens' Films in Zlín.

Despite this incomplete enumeration Vítezslav Jandák does not know, if he is an actor, at all, because he cannot remember his lines. On the occasion of shooting his latest role in teh Czech series "The Black Barons" he describes it like this: "Today every director knows, that the first shot must be good, because I cannot keep my text. It is as if a tiger laughs, you have to record it immediately, because the animal won't do it again. And Jándak won't either. So they tape me and sometimes something comes of it."

Very modest, this man. But no wonder if you used to think of your profession as a "subordinate job". Escpecially one thing bothers Jandák: That as an actor either you don't have a role and are waiting for a call whole of the time or you are playing a good role and meanwhile fear the decline, which must come. And even for the greatest actors there is a comedown, he believes, because the market always demands news. Therefore Jandák likes his profession, but finds it cruel, too. Because "this is no good for a man, actually, it is too emotional and you can decide only few things."

This dark side of a real positiv man, as Jandák thinks of himself, shows itself in bleak prospects, lying ahaed in Jandák's opinion. In fact he wants the Good to triumph in this world, but klnows, that this is impossible, "because we approach decline and it is likely to plunge onto us. When I am dying after its fall I will be 75 and then I will no longer care." Well, thanks a lot...

Despite the rather bad chances for a quiet old age Jandák does not fail to help others. Being an asthmatic and allergic himself, he is chariman of the club "Lion's baby" helping children suffering from asthma. So lately a basketballfield was build for a sanatorium. And as Prague has the worst air in the Republic, the club pays a fotnight in free nature for selected schools. Besides now and then they buy instruments for a Prague hospital. Being a modest man, Jandák does not like to talk about it.

He loves the Wild West (even if he will never see America because he rejects entering a plane). In the car and in bed he listens to county music and dreams of creeks and hills, which must not be too high, so that he can climb them with his asthma. In 1989 he even joined rodeos, and he likes especially old wildwest-films, e.g. starring John Wayne who Jandák belives is a masculine idol. Besides in these films justice and truth always win. Like in the fairytale-films, he therefore liked to play in. Often he remembers "Three hazelnuts", "Florian's Joy" and "Prince Frog". Reruns of his older films, in which he used to look better, as he thinks, Vítezslav Jandák sometimes likes to watch. His children like him, too, and of course he enjoys this.

In his films he often wore uniforms. Jandák thinks this is amusing, because due to a meningitis he was freed from military service in 1969. Apart from roles as policeman, SS-man and PI Jandák played almost 20 soldiers. He traces this to his upright posture. In the series "The Black Barons" he impersonates Capt. Orech, in a childrens' series about soldiers "Uncle Captain" and he played in a series about partisans. But meanwhile Jandák thinks of himself more as "Steve McQueen of Czech film", because in all of his parts he must have started to laugh somewhen, so now he often gets Schwejk- and political roles and makes him a father-type.

With all his darkness and all of his serious roles Vítezslav Jandák is someone who loves "Tom and Jerry", colorful TV-series and happy endings. Frankly he admits to cry at some films, not because the quality is so good, but if the relations between the characters are problematic, he is touched. To his children he then pretends to suffer from hayfever. In return Jandák is not at all interested in politics and talkshows. He wants TV to distract daily concerns and always end happily.

Vítezslav Jandák has got two grown-up children. His son resembles him a lot and joins diplomatic school. His daughter Klara is extremely good-looking, as the proud father thinks. She is going on studying at the University of Barcelona.

Vitek in 3nfc can hardly be the first part of Jaroslav Drbohlav. But Honza in "Ta chvíle, ten okamžik" (something like "The While, The Moment") of 1981 maybe the last, since Jaroslav died in 1985 aged only 38. The european public may know him from "Operation Daybreak" of 1976 as Voják.

She became known by her role as "beautiful woman" Anna Urbanova. At last she played in the movie "Kamenak2".

Two years she has fought cancer and endured heavy chemical therapy through which she lost all her hair. At last she lost the fihgt against the cruel disease. President Václav Klaus found some hearty words on the occasion of her death: "We all loved her and we will miss her."

the Czech horse
Calif, the German horse

Jurášek, Cinderella's horse and an important character in the film is - horselovers have recognized it long ago - two horses. According to the script it should have been a black horse, now it has become a white one.

After filming some scenes in Bohemia, the horses should be transferred to Eastern Germany where some other scenes should be done. But the team got no entry permit for the animals, because just these days the infectious foot-and-mouth disease raged in the Czech Republic, as the German public authorities claimed. In fact there were only a few zoo-animals suffering from the illness, but nevertheless the filmteam had to go alone - without the horses.

What is Cinderella without doves!

The Doves are called peackock-pigeons if you literally translate the name from German. Perhaps someone knows the right English term. Just look at them - aren't they beautiful?

This kind of pigeon is one of the oldest races of pigeons (Columba livia). They come in varoius colours, but white is the most poular (and as I think most beautiful) one.

These are Figaro and Fioretta in their nest. Pigeons' nests aren't great pieces of art....

....Amanda proves: This kind of pigeons does not have to be white.

The Pigeon and her "husband" stay a lifetime together and share doing the housework like building a nest and bringing up the babies. "Married" couples love each other very much and bill and schmooch all the time ... no wonder these birds have become a symbol for romantic love.

The reason for the bright white color of the birds is that they are wild about bathing. They absolutely have to sit down in every waterpot and have showers when it is raining ... and after that they preen themselves and the feathers are dried in the sunlight.

This kind of pigeons is rather intelligent and they become tame quite quickly. I've not yet tried if they can sort peas and lentils ... but I have some doubts :o))
